Nature has always been very vibrant, giving, and resilient to a very large extent. We, as Indians, take the utmost pride in our strong cultural heritage, and our religious teachings remind us to protect and nurture nature. If we look at Hinduism, the community worships the sun, wind, land, trees, plants, and water which is the very base of human survival. In this sense, nature and culture become intertwined. India is a culturally rich and diverse country where people speak many different languages, with many communities which live in their respective social structures completely depending on their environment to ensure their livelihood.

Being Indians, one of our strongest attributes is our sense of smell which takes us back to the smells from our kitchens and the smell of our land. The aroma of our favourite food or the odour of wet earth on a rainy day — our sense of smell has the power to lift our moods and transport us to a different time.

While aromatherapy technically involves using the fragrance of plant essences to promote healing, scents heal our surroundings daily. The smell of freshly cut grass, for instance, is a distress call to warn other plants to switch their defence mechanisms on, and to protect themselves against parasitic bacteria.

Let’s look at a few examples of how popular ingredients have been ingeniously used in Indian society.

Sandalwood (Chandan)- In traditional medicine, sandalwood oil has been used as an antiseptic and astringent, and for the treatment of headaches, stomach aches, and urinary and genital disorders. In India, the essential oil, emulsion, or paste of sandalwood is used in the treatment of inflammatory and eruptive skin diseases. The oil has been used in the traditional Ayurveda medicinal system as a diuretic and mild stimulant, and for smoothing the skin.

Turmeric- Historically, turmeric was used in Ayurveda and other traditional Indian medical systems for disorders of the skin, upper respiratory tract, joints, and digestive system. Today, turmeric is promoted as a dietary supplement for a variety of conditions, including arthritis, digestive disorders, respiratory infections, allergies, liver disease, depression, and many others.

Basil (Tulsi)- Indian mythology attaches a great significance to Basil by recognizing it as a holy herb. Perhaps, such significance comes from the actual health applications of the herb. Its use is recommended as first aid in the treatment of respiratory, digestive, and skin diseases. Apart from these common ailments, Ayurveda also recognizes its use for diseases ranging up to tumorous growths.

The symbiotic relationship we have with nature is indestructible. Today, there’s a great demand for brands to embrace nature and run operations in conjunction with preserving the environment around them. New-age business models realize that their consumers are looking for a sustainable story behind the brands they consume and the immense value of uplifting the mind, body, and soul through nature’s goodness.
